Homeschool PE: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Radford, VA
For homeschooling families, physical education can be one of the trickier subjects to deliver well. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers a complete, structured, and genuinely fun answer. At Blue Gorilla BJJ in Radford, your child can earn real physical education while building discipline, confidence, and friendships that last well beyond the mat.
BJJ is far more than a workout. It teaches children to use leverage and technique to control a larger opponent, to stay calm under pressure, and to keep showing up and improving. Those are exactly the kinds of lessons that round out a strong homeschool education.
Why BJJ Is Ideal for Homeschool PE
A good PE program should do more than burn energy. It should develop the body, the mind, and the character together. BJJ does all three at once.
1. Real Physical Education
Grappling is a full-body activity that builds strength, conditioning, balance, and coordination. Your child develops genuine athletic ability while learning a practical skill, which is a far cry from running laps or filling out a worksheet.
2. Discipline and Focus
Every class asks children to listen carefully, follow instructions, and persevere through challenges. Over time, that structure becomes a habit that carries directly into their academic work at home.
3. Socialization and Community
One of the most common goals for homeschool families is healthy social interaction, and the mat is an excellent place for it. Children train alongside peers of different ages and backgrounds, learning teamwork, respect, and how to handle both winning and losing with grace.
A Coach Who Understands Homeschooling
Our program has a special connection to the homeschool community through Coach Foster, an assistant kids instructor and a homeschooling dad himself. Foster brings over fifteen years of experience in health and recreation, plus more than a decade owning and operating a local fitness business, giving him a deep understanding of physical education and community building.
His own sons train in our program, and he is passionate about helping the next generation build discipline and confidence. You can meet Coach Foster and the rest of our staff on our about us page.
How Our Kids Program Works
Our kids program grows with your child across three levels, so they are always challenged at the right pace. Lil’ Grapplers introduces beginners to movement, positioning, and self-defense through games and drills, with no live sparring. Junior Gorillas builds on those fundamentals at an intermediate pace, and Future Black Belts adds sparring and submissions in a controlled, supportive setting.
Children as young as 3 may attend on a case-by-case basis, with most beginners between the ages of 5 and 16. Every level keeps fun and safety front and center.
Flexible Options for Homeschool Families
We love working with homeschool families and groups, and offer a variety of options for kids and adults to attend throughout the week. You can review our current class times on our schedule page, then contact us to ask about rates and availability.
Safety and Instructor Vetting
Your child’s safety is our highest priority. Every continual instructor at Blue Gorilla BJJ is a current or former member of law enforcement or the United States military, has passed a thorough background check, has been trained in emergency first aid and CPR, and has been specifically vetted to work with children.
We also hold firm hygiene and conduct standards on the mats, and parents are always welcome to watch.
What Parents Say
Families consistently tell us the program delivers far more than they expected. Isabelle, a parent, shared: “Incredible instructors, amazing offerings! This locally owned spot has it all and more… This is a life-changing space and there’s something for the whole family! I knew I wanted my daughters in jiu jitsu from the moment we were expecting, and I don’t trust anybody as much as Coach Adam to teach them. He has curated a space that is not only incredibly impactful but safe and fun for kids.”
