Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Radford, VA
Enrolling your child in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about far more than learning a martial art. At Blue Gorilla BJJ in Radford, our kids program is built to develop the whole child, growing the confidence, discipline, and focus that carry over into the classroom, the home, and every part of life.
BJJ is a grappling-based art that teaches children to rely on leverage and technique instead of size or aggression. There is no striking or kicking. Instead, kids learn to stay calm, solve problems, and control a situation safely, which makes it one of the most practical and empowering activities a child can take up.
What BJJ Teaches Children
The lessons your child learns on the mat reach well beyond self-defense. In fact, parents often tell us the changes they notice at home are what surprise them most.
1. Confidence and Anti-Bullying Skills
BJJ gives children a quiet, grounded confidence. Knowing they can physically handle themselves makes them less likely to be targeted and far less likely to panic if they ever are. Because the art is built around control rather than striking, kids learn to protect themselves and de-escalate without throwing a punch.
2. Discipline and Focus
Every class asks children to listen, follow instructions, and keep trying when something is hard. Over time, that structure becomes a habit. Many parents report improvements in attention, behavior, and even grades once their child has trained for a few months.
3. Fitness and Coordination
Children today get less unstructured physical activity than ever before. BJJ gets them moving, building strength, balance, and body awareness while they are having too much fun to notice they are exercising.
Our Fun-First Teaching Method
We learned long ago that the secret to teaching children jiu-jitsu is to make it genuinely fun. Our beginner classes use specific games and drills that teach the art almost without the kids realizing it. They develop a real understanding of positioning, leverage, and control, all wrapped inside play.
There is no live sparring and no submissions in the beginner level. This keeps things safe and builds a strong foundation, so children grow to love training and want to keep coming back. Once they are comfortable and ready, sparring and submissions are introduced gradually at the higher levels.
Class Levels and Ages
Our kids program grows with your child across three levels, so they are always challenged at the right pace. You can find current class times on our schedule page.
Lil’ Grapplers (Beginner)
This is where most children begin. The focus is fun, movement, positioning, and self-defense through games and drills, with no live sparring. It is the perfect starting point for new students and for our youngest members.
Junior Gorillas (Intermediate)
As children master the basics, Junior Gorillas builds on that foundation at a slightly faster pace, sharpening technique and adding more structured training while keeping the atmosphere positive and encouraging.
Future Black Belts (Advanced)
Our most experienced young students step up to Future Black Belts, where live sparring and submissions are taught in a controlled, supportive setting. This level deepens their skills and prepares them for adult classes down the road.
Children as young as 3 may attend on a case-by-case basis, with most beginners falling between the ages of 5 and 16. Children under 5 should have a parent stay unless our staff advises otherwise.
Safety and Instructor Vetting
Your child’s safety is our highest priority. Every continual instructor at Blue Gorilla BJJ is a current or former member of law enforcement or the United States military. Each has passed a thorough background check, has been trained in emergency first aid and CPR, and has been specifically vetted to work with children.
We also hold firm hygiene and conduct standards on the mats, and parents are always welcome to watch. You can meet our full coaching staff and read their backgrounds on our about us page.
What Parents Say
Parents are the best source of truth about a kids program, so we will let them speak for themselves.
Jessica, a Radford parent, shared: “We kept hearing great things about Blue Gorilla, so we had our son try a free class. He was immediately hooked… Over the past few months, we have watched our son’s confidence and strength grow. He’s learning skills, but he’s also learning to push himself and how much he’s capable of when he really puts in effort. The coaches are incredible… they are also the type of people I appreciate my son looking up to as mentors.”
Another parent, Petra, came to us with specific concerns and left with a transformation: “I was hesitant to bring my neurodivergent child into any gym… I met with Coach Adam and his wife, Jerri, and expressed my concerns and hopes. Both of them immediately put me to ease… Fast forward 3 months later and my child has not only become more confident, but stronger, more disciplined, and looking forward to mat time at Blue Gorilla. Grades have improved. Attitude has improved. Physical and mental health have transformed as I had never thought possible.”

Frequently Asked Questions
How young can my child start?
We welcome children as young as 3 on a case-by-case basis, with much depending on where they are in potty training and their ability to follow along. Most beginners are between 5 and 16 years old.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for kids?
Yes. Our beginner classes involve no live sparring and no submissions, focusing instead on safe games, movement, and positioning. Sparring is only introduced later, gradually, and always under close supervision.
What if my child is shy or not very tough yet?
That is completely normal, and we see it often. Just bring them and let the coaches coach. With a little time, shy and hesitant kids consistently come out of their shells and begin to look forward to class.
What should my child wear to the first class?
For the first few classes, comfortable athletic clothing without metal zippers is fine, along with a water bottle. A gi can come later, once your child is settled in.
